Our Story

The Bragg Creek and Greater Area Historical Society

Beautiful Bragg Creek is located in a picturesque corner of the Alberta foothills in the Elbow River watershed. Known for its well established and maintained trail system, which provide recreational opportunities for mountain bikers, hikers, cross country skiers and the like, many people are unaware of the rich and varied history of the area.

In 2013, a group of local residents recognised the need for a historical society that would accurately record and preserve the history of the area and provide educational opportunities to locals and visitors alike. That group of tenacious individuals officially completed the provincial registration requirements to establish Bragg Creek and Greater Area Historical Society in 2014.

The Bragg Creek and Greater Area Historical Society consists of a group of local residents who are interested in researching and accurately preserving the fascinating history of the area. The greater area encompasses Millarville, Priddis and Kew to the south, Kananaskis Country (formerly Bow-Crow Forest) to the west, Jumping Pound to the north and Tsuut’ina Nation to the east.

A volunteer board of directors oversees the many activities of the Society including the publication of educational historical articles, special event participation, an informative guest speaker series and community event participation. Books and physical items of historical interest and significance are preserved, catalogued and organized into the Society’s library collection.

Bragg Creek and Greater Area Historical Society has individuals with the expertise to provide accurate information on local history.

Our General Principles Are:

  • To acquire quality items that relate to different time periods in our history.
  • To seek out materials that are at risk of being destroyed or forgotten.
  • All materials obtained must be appropriately categorized, signed by a waiver outlining the purpose of use, who they came from; what people, places and events they relate to.
